5 Tips to Use Social Media to Boost Your Home Improvement Business

If you’re not already using social media to promote your business, now is the time to start. With millions of people using social media accounts every day, it’s one of the most visible places to gain exposure and connect with customers. Best of all, social media doesn’t require a big marketing budget and is something you can manage completely in-house, making it ideal for small home improvement businesses seeking organic WOM (word of mouth) marketing.

Here are 5 simple ways to use social media to start boosting your business.

1. Provide Helpful Information

This is the number one rule of using social media for business. Make sure the content you provide is useful and appealing to your audience. Don’t make the focus of your posts about selling. Provide links to articles, websites or businesses that your readers will find useful. Build your reputation as an expert and they’ll keep coming back for more.

2. Post Photos

Social sites are great places for home improvement businesses to post pictures of their work! Post Before and After photos of your projects. Be sure your photos are targeted towards your preferred audience. For example, if your preferred clients are residential customers, then don’t fill your page with photos of commercial projects you’ve done in the past.

Videos work well too. If you’ve completely remodeled a building, post a video tour! Even simple “How-To” videos such as how to prep walls for painting are effective at getting your name out there and providing a service to your audience (i.e. customers) at the same time. You can create the videos yourself or provide a link to a video you find useful. Make sure to include a little blurb about why your readers should check it out.

3. Share Information

Sharing information is different from providing helpful information. When you share information you are letting your followers get to know you. People are more likely to hire someone they feel like they know. So share tidbits about the business, new hires, awards you’ve won, news articles you’ve been mentioned in, little league teams you’ve sponsored, etc. If you’ve had some bad press, address it head on and let customers know what you have done to resolve the issue. Whatever you do, leave a positive impression so you can build trust.

4. Run Promotions

Businesses are always running promotions on their social media pages. It’s an excellent way keep current customers coming back for more and acquire new customers along the way. Promote a discount, contest or giveaway on your social sites. To enter, require the reader to “like” or “follow” you or sign up for your mailing list. Take it one step further by offering an additional incentive for “sharing” your page. Just like that you’ve expanded your list of leads!

5. Develop Partnerships

Extend your reach by partnering with complementary businesses. You’ll reach all of their fans in addition to your own. How do you develop these partnerships? Link to their content and pages, recommend their products or website, and participate on their blogs by making comments that contribute to the conversation.
