Pouring a Concrete Driveway or Walkway

Poured concrete is a popular material for driveways and walkways — and for good reason: It’s durable, it requires little maintenance and it offers a number of versatile and decorative options. Of course, it also requires proper planning. So, be sure to consider the following before embarking on your poured concrete project:

Developing a Plan

It’s important to have a plan before you hire a company to pour your driveway. Details like the number of cars in your family, the length of your driveway and the location of your home will affect your driveway’s length and size. Fortunately, skilled pros can pour your concrete to meet any spatial or logistical needs. You may want to consider a curved driveway to maximize the curb appeal of your home.

Structural Must-Haves

Professional driveway standards require five sacks of cement per cubic yard and a compressive strength of no less than 2800 PSI. Your driveway concrete should also have a minimum thickness of four inches and rest on a tightly compacted surface. Your expansion joints should not exceed 150 square feet. The depth of the joints should be a minimum of one-fourth the thickness of the slab. For example, a four-inch slab will require one-inch-deep joints.

Concrete Costs

The price of concrete varies, which sometimes makes it difficult to provide accurate estimates. Transporting concrete will also account for a large part of your overall cost. Regardless, concrete is a cheaper alternative than pavers, brick or cobblestone.

Decorative Concrete Walkways and Driveways

Decorative concrete can spice up traditional driveways and walkways. You can finish your concrete to look like elegant stones or opt for unique textures and patterns. When it comes to transforming your home’s exterior, decorative concrete is an affordable alternative to expensive pavers and natural stone.
